Applications of Cast Iron Ball Check Valves

A cast iron ball check valve utilizes a spherical valve core (usually a free-floating sphere) to automatically open and close under pressure, preventing backflow. Combining the advantages of cast iron with the structural features of a ball check valve, it is very useful in specific applications.

The following are its main application areas and features:

1. Water Supply and Drainage Systems:

Municipal Water Supply Networks: Installed at pump outlets, water tower/tank inlets, pipe branches, or before specific equipment, they prevent backflow during pump shutdown or pressure drops, protecting the pump and upstream piping equipment.

Building Water Supply Systems: Used in building water mains, zoned water supply connections, pump rooms, and other locations to prevent water from flowing back from higher floors and contaminating the water source.

Drainage/Sewage Systems: Used in locations where sewage backflow must be prevented (such as pump station outlets and pipe junctions). However, care should be taken to minimize the presence of excessive solids in the medium, as this may affect the ball seal and cause it to become stuck.

2. Fire Protection Systems:

Fire Pump Outlet: This is one of the most critical installation locations to prevent high-pressure water from flowing back through the pipeline network and impacting the pump when the pump is shut down.

Fire Water Tank/Reservoir Inlet Pipeline: Prevents water backflow.

Wet Alarm Valve Assembly: Maintains system pressure direction.

3. Industrial Processes (Low Pressure, Non-Severe Conditions):

Cooling Water Systems: Installed on cooling water supply lines for factory equipment.

Low-Pressure Steam Systems: Installed on low-pressure steam pipelines with less stringent requirements (note the suitability and temperature limits of cast iron for steam).

Compressed Air Systems: Prevents gas backflow in low-pressure compressed air pipelines (ensure the air is dry and clean). General process pipelines: Liquid or gas pipelines with moderate pressure and relatively clean media, which do not require extremely strict sealing requirements
